A fear of flying is like any other phobia: it is simply an intense fear that is out of all proportion to the actual danger. But try telling that to the part of you which lies deep inside which either absolutely refuses to get on a plane, or does so under huge duress. It disagrees totally.
Most of us cheerfully cross the road but even though flying is proven to be the safest form of travel, we still baulk at the prospect. And like any phobia the more we avoid it the more we make it worse.
WHERE DOES A FEAR OF FLYING COME FROM?
Having a fear of flying can start just at the idea of booking a flight, even when we want to go on that holiday. For others it starts on the way to the airport. When you arrive at the airport, we are bombarded by all sorts of messages such as, the “final call” to our “final destination”, so it’s no wonder by the time we get on the plane we’re already feeling anxious. For others it may be the crowds, previous memories of something happening during a flight could leave us with an expectation that a panic attack could occur again. Sometimes the fear of being confined in an enclosed space (claustrophobia) can trigger the phobia, or the turbulence is a key factor. So, a fear of flying can be a simple phobia or it can be complex.
It doesn’t matter what the nature of the phobia is, it is possible to bring about changes so that you can approach the upcoming flight with confidence and also with a set of tools that you know will allow you to deal with any scenario.
