Panic disorder is a sudden, overwhelming, extremely intense attack of fear and anxiety that consumes your body and thoughts, lasting anything from 20 seconds to 20 minutes. You will feel an urge to escape from imminent danger, although this sense of danger is often irrational. Normally, you will be able to identify a particular situation that triggered your panic attack, such as relationship issues, a work presentation, or a bereavement. Panic attacks can make you feel dizzy, nauseous, and you may hyperventilate. A panic attack is not life-threatening, but the tightness in your chest or palpitations can mimic a heart attack and feel quite scary.

What is Panic Disorder?

You could have Panic Disorder if you are experiencing REPEATED panic attacks (anything from once a month to a few times a week) with no specific cause or trigger. If you have Panic Disorder, your panic attacks might stop for a period of time, but they are likely to suddenly return out of the blue and repeat themselves for no particular reason. This can be extremely frightening and it is important to seek professional support, such as Hypnotherapy for panic attacks, which can reduce or dilute your attacks of fear.

Symptoms of Panic Disorder

  • Shortness of breath/hyperventilation (rapid, shallow breaths through the mouth)
  • Choking sensations/feeling suffocated
  • Palpitations/racing heart/chest pain or tightness
  • Sweating/hot flushes
  • Dizziness/feeling like you might faint
  • Depersonalisation (a feeling of being detached from your body, an outside observer)
  • Derealisation (a feeling that things around you aren’t real)
  • Nausea
  • Numbness or tingling sensations
  • Shaking
  • Temporarily unable to move certain parts of your body
  • Brain fog
  • Feeling out of control
  • Feeling like you might die or have a heart attack

In addition, you will most likely feel rising terror and an urge to escape imminent danger.

Panic can be an irrational fear that makes us over-react to a normal situation

When we perceive a threat, our body responds by producing the stress hormones Adrenaline and Noradrenaline, and this is when we experience “Panic”. If you are naturally quite an anxious person, the body can over-react and produce too much stress hormone, thinking that a minor threat – like a work presentation or a row with your partner or a job interview – is actually a seriously major threat. Your body then goes into overdrive and the fight or flight sensation kicks in. Your heart then starts pumping fast, your breathing speeds up, you feel short of breath, your mind goes blank etc.

If you could act on your fight or flight response and run away, then your body would soon calm down.

Let’s say you are standing in front of an audience, about to give a presentation and you feel rising panic, as explained above. If you could act on your fight or flight response and run away, then your body would soon calm down and you would feel normal again quite quickly. But running from the room would be embarrassing and unprofessional, so you have to ignore your instinct to flee.

The Panic reaction, therefore, becomes more intense as you cannot escape from the perceived threat.  Your heart starts to pound, your breathing is tight, you feel light-headed, start sweating and stuttering, your hands start to shake, you forget what you want to say and you find yourself in the midst of a panic attack.

I am a highly skilled Anxiety Hypnotherapist in Kent and have helped many people overcome Panic Disorder.
